I’ll Be Waiting at the Rainbow Bridge
I know the house feels quieter.
I know you still turn your head when something shifts...
hoping, for a second, it might be me.
And maybe… in some ways… it is.
I’m not where I was.
Not on the sofa, not under the chair, not in the sunbeam or the corner of the rug.
But I’m in the sound of the kettle when it clicks.
In the biscuit that falls and you still pick it up out of habit.
In the pause before bed when you realise it’s too quiet.
I know you wonder if I knew.
I did.
I knew I was loved.
I knew I was safe.
I knew that, in the most ordinary, beautiful ways… I had everything.
And I need you to know something, too:
There was no better life than the one I had with you.
So rest when you can. Cry when you must.
And smile when the smell of toast makes you think of me.
Because I’ll be there.
And when the time comes... when the light finds you again...
I’ll run.
I’ll know your voice.
I’ll smell like biscuits.
And I’ll be home.
Until then,
