The Legend
The Tale of the Great Cat Wave
Long before the sofa corners were sacrificed… before cardboard kingdoms took over the living room… there was a wave.
Two hundred years ago, a printmaker called Hokusai carved a single moment in time — a great wave curling over fishermen, foam reaching for the sky, Mount Fuji watching from a quiet distance. The print travelled the world. It hung in galleries. It became, perhaps, the most famous wave ever made.
But there is another version of the story. A quieter one.
In a small fishing village along the Kanagawa coast, there lived a cat who was not afraid of the sea. While the others kept to the warm tatami and the smell of grilled fish, she would walk to the shore at dawn and sit, very still, watching the water build itself into mountains.
The fishermen called her Nami-chan — Little Wave. And they swore that on the morning the great wave came, she rode it. Not away from shore, but toward it. Tail high. Whiskers steady. Entirely unbothered.
We can't prove the story. But we made her a mat, just in case she comes back.
If she has returned… you'll know where to find her.
Bring the wave home →A mat worth scratching
Art that lives on the floor
Inspired by the Great Wave off Kanagawa — indigo, foam-white, paper-cream. Not just a mat. A scene your cat performs on.
Sofa's silent bodyguard
Gives claws somewhere worthy to go. Your furniture exhales.
Just-right resistance
Soft sisal that holds up to the most theatrical of crests. Durable enough for daily scratching, stretching, and the occasional 3am existential crisis.
Made slowly, made well
Durable. Practical. Quietly beautiful. Ready for daily performances and unscheduled philosophical sit-ins.
I don't destroy things.
I express myself.
This wave understands that.
A day with the wave
Morning
Tea in hand. Your cat already at work.
Afternoon
Sun catches the indigo. The wave glows quietly.
Evening
Zoomies. Drama. A final, satisfied scratch.
It doesn't shout for attention. But somehow… everyone notices it.
Tested by cats
Left in a room with three cats and one perfectly good sofa.
The sofa remained… largely unbothered.
Quietly asked questions
Will my cat actually use it?
Cats are famously opinionated about scratching surfaces, but sisal is on the short list of materials they reliably love — it has the right resistance, the right texture, and the right fibre direction. We tested the Great Cat Wave Mat with three cats and one perfectly good sofa; the sofa remained largely unbothered.
What if my cat ignores it at first?
Don't worry — most cats discover it within a week. Place the mat right next to where they already scratch (sofa corner, carpet edge, that bit of doorframe), so it gets folded into their existing routine rather than asking them to invent a new one. Cats are creatures of habit; the mat just needs to enter the territory map. A quick rub of catnip on the surface speeds things along too.
What is sisal, and is it safe for cats?
Sisal is a natural plant fibre made from the leaves of the Agave sisalana plant. It has been used for centuries to make rope and matting because it's strong, naturally textured, and biodegradable. It's completely safe for cats — the fibres are non-toxic and pass through harmlessly if a small piece is swallowed. The Great Cat Wave Mat uses 100% natural sisal with no synthetic blends or harmful coatings.
What size of cat is this designed for?
The mat is 60 × 40 cm (about 24 × 16 inches), which comfortably accommodates cats from kittens to large breeds like Maine Coons. Most adult cats use 30–50 cm of length when fully stretched, so the mat gives them room for a proper post-scratch reach without falling off the edge.
How do I clean a sisal scratching mat?
Vacuum regularly to lift trapped fur and debris. For spills, blot with a damp cloth and let it air-dry — never soak sisal, as the fibres can deform when waterlogged. Avoid placing the mat near direct heat sources like radiators or fireplaces, which can dry the fibres out over time. With normal care, the mat holds its shape for years.
Where does the cat wave artwork come from?
The artwork is an original Whiskery Sour design — an homage to Katsushika Hokusai's 1831 woodblock print The Great Wave off Kanagawa, reimagined with cats riding the foam, fish-bone reefs, and a tiny umbrella mouse for company. Designed in the UK by Whiskery Sour® founder Jen, ethically produced with a trusted overseas partner.
Hello... I'm Jen.
I started Whiskery Sour® from a small studio in Essex because most cat scratching mats look like they were designed for the warehouse, not the home. So I set out to design pet products that actually felt like part of a home. Small pieces of art that happen to have a job.
Each mat carries a little story, a character, sometimes a song. Made with love, made carefully, made in small numbers.
If you've found us, hello. I hope your cat falls quietly in love with the wave.
