Official notice: the bathroom door has been closed. The cat has reviewed this decision and found it procedurally unsound.
The short answer: your cat follows you to the bathroom because you are part of their territory, their routine and, quite possibly, their favourite social group. A closed door also creates an irresistible information gap. In most cases the behaviour is normal and affectionate. Pay closer attention only if the following suddenly becomes much more intense, or arrives alongside changes in appetite, toileting, vocalising or confidence.
Why is the bathroom suddenly a group project?
Cats are often described as independent, which is true in the same way that a senior manager is independent: they still expect to know where everyone is, what they are doing and why a door has been closed without consultation.
Your home is your cat's territory. They patrol it through scent, sound and routine, and you are one of its most important moving parts. When you stand up at the same time each morning and walk toward a small room full of interesting smells, running water and forbidden cupboards, following you is not strange. From the cat's point of view, failing to investigate would be professionally negligent.
PRIVACY POLICY — feline amendment: doors may remain closed only when the cat is already on the preferred side. Any door separating the cat from a human will be treated as a temporary administrative error.
What your cat is actually checking
- Your routine. Cats build remarkably precise maps of the household day. Bathroom, kettle, breakfast, shoes, departure: they learn the sequence. Following you is partly how they keep the timetable accurate.
- Your availability. You are briefly stationary, at cat height and less likely to wander away. For a sociable cat, this is premium access to an otherwise mobile employee.
- The closed door. Cats dislike losing access to part of their territory. The room may be uninteresting when open and an urgent matter of national importance the moment it closes.
- Running water. Taps, drips and echoes are excellent cat entertainment. Some cats also prefer moving water to a still bowl.
- Warmth and texture. Heated floors, bath mats, towels and sinks offer several highly rated seating options, none of which were purchased for the cat and are therefore especially valuable.
- You. Sometimes the answer really is that simple. Cats form strong social attachments and many prefer to keep their chosen people within sight.
Is it affection, curiosity or a demand for breakfast?
Usually it is a blend. Look at the rest of the body language. An upright tail, relaxed ears, a slow blink and a gentle rub against your legs suggest friendly social contact. Intense meowing beside an empty bowl suggests a more commercial arrangement. A cat who sits quietly on the bath mat may simply enjoy being near you; a cat who repeatedly leads you out of the room is issuing instructions.
The tail is particularly useful evidence. Our field guide to cat tail language explains the difference between a friendly question-mark tail, an irritated twitch and the full bottle-brush emergency setting.
Should I let my cat into the bathroom?
If the room is safe and you do not mind the supervision, there is no behavioural reason to forbid it. But bathrooms contain several things worth managing: cleaning products, medicines, razors, hot styling tools, open windows and occasionally a full bath. Keep chemicals and medication secured, close the toilet lid if your cat likes to investigate water, and never leave them alone around a hot bath or running tap.
If you would prefer privacy, consistency matters more than negotiation. Give your cat a comfortable waiting place outside, close the door calmly and reopen it only when they are quiet. If scratching or shouting makes the door open immediately, the cat has learned a very efficient access procedure and will submit the same request tomorrow.
When following becomes clinginess worth noting
A cat who has always followed you is behaving like themselves. A cat who suddenly cannot let you out of sight is telling you something has changed. Stress, pain, changes in hearing or vision, cognitive changes in older cats and household disruption can all increase shadowing behaviour.
Speak to your vet if the new clinginess comes with reduced appetite, weight change, unusual thirst, litter tray changes, hiding, restlessness at night, persistent vocalising or seeming uncomfortable when moving. Following alone is not a diagnosis; a noticeable change from your cat's normal pattern is the useful signal.
A word from the facilities desk. Some cats follow because every room needs an approved observation post. A warm covered bed gives them somewhere to supervise without sitting directly on your feet. The Capybara Cat House is enclosed, cosy and shaped like an animal whose own approach to personal boundaries appears equally relaxed. Position it near household activity, then enjoy the possibility of crossing a room without an escort.
What NOT to do
- Do not punish the following. Your cat is seeking information or company, not plotting a security breach.
- Do not reward door-scratching every time. Wait for a quiet pause before opening the door, or scratching becomes the official handle.
- Do not trap them inside. If your cat follows you in, make sure they can leave safely when they have completed the inspection.
- Do not ignore a sudden personality change. New, intense shadowing deserves the same attention as any other abrupt change in routine.
- Do not assume every escort is emotional. Sometimes you stood up within forty minutes of dinner. The file is therefore food-related.
Questions from outside the door
Why does my cat cry when I close the bathroom door?
The closed door blocks access to both you and part of their territory. If you usually open it after they cry, the behaviour also works. Build a calmer routine by offering a bed or small activity outside, closing the door for brief periods and reopening it during a quiet moment.
Why does my cat sit on me in the bathroom?
You are warm, still and unusually available. For a cat who values contact, it is a rare appointment with no competing laptop, washing-up or movement. Their timing is socially questionable; their reasoning is sound.
Why does my cat follow me everywhere, not just to the bathroom?
Some cats are naturally social and closely bonded to one person. Following can also be driven by routine, boredom or the expectation of food and play. If your cat is relaxed when left alone and behaves normally otherwise, a household shadow is usually just a personality type.
Can I teach my cat to wait outside?
Yes. Place a comfortable mat or bed nearby, reward calm waiting and practise with very short door closures. Increase the time gradually. Avoid opening the door while they are actively scratching or shouting; wait for even a one-second pause, then reward the quiet behaviour.
Because underneath the jokes about supervision is something rather lovely: your cat has an entire home to choose from, and still keeps choosing the room you are in. Privacy has been rejected. Membership, however, has been unanimously approved.
